Snow (It's back!)

Sorry to post this when there's another thread about the weather, but here in Coeburn the snow has started falling again!

Earlier today everything was covered, but just recently alot of it had dried up and it wasn't really doing much..

But now it's falling heavily, the yard is covered, the roads are starting to get covered, and the same amount of snow that I had on my porch when school was let out is now there again.

If it keeps this up, Wise Co. will be closed tomorrow, no doubt about it.

Anyone else in Coeburn getting heavy snow as well? How about you guys that aren't in Coeburn? How's it looking?

Its bad in most places, Norton is covered. I can only imagine what Wise looks like.

Probably about 1-1/2 inches in Pennington. Seen a report of 3-4 in Keokee. Heard on the scanner this morning about 9 or so, a report of 3-4 in Wise.

Oh well, I'm really anxious to see how this next system plays out, starting later on this week. Looks interesting, for now. [img]/LDPforum/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif[/img]

Those of us in school are pretty lucky because not only is this snow getting us out today and possibly tomorrow (even if not then, a 90 min. delay is still extra sleep for me!), but Monday we don't have to go because it's Martin Luther King, Jr. Day!

We dismissed at 9:30 and I didn't get home until 2:15. That ought to tell a story. My bus run is in Thacker's Branch, Needmore, and Dorchester. Myself and three or four other buses could not get out of Wise. We were turned back and told to return the kids to school. I took the Primary kids back to the Primary School and the rest to Addington Middle School. We stayed there and the Middle School fed us, until we were released to carry on. By that time, most of the kids had been picked up. Back when I was still teaching and even now as a Bus Driver, I tend to feel that, "Wise County likes to inconvenience as many people as possible." Some parents have to make other arrangements for their children to be taken care of when school is let out or we miss a day. Earlier decisions sometimes would be helpful.

Have a couple inches here in Norton.

A gentleman trying to turn off of Kentucky Avenue this morning didn't bet on the combination of centripetal force and slick roads, and took out one of our office light poles. Fortunately there were no injuries.

I really think we're too used to how VDOT used to handle inclement weather (prior to budget cuts). They no longer put down salt/gravel in advance of snowfall; while doing so is not a cure for travel woes, it sure helps.

A lil FYI, you can thank your state government, my dad works at VDOT, he in fact drives a salt truck, he begain working there in 1989 I believe, we had this conversation just the other day. When he began there were 34 people working at the lot in Glamorgan. Today, would you like to guess how many work there? 12, yes 12. 12 trucks which are supposed to run 24 hours during snow weather, now I know I am not Eienstein, but whats that show you? To cover the areas of Jenkins Mtn through Pound into Wise to the cut off into Norton.

Would love to know what genious in the ranks decided "let's cut the VDOT budget! we'll save a fortune!"

Very frustrating. We were discussing it at work. The VDOT employees can only work with the resources they're given.

The same morons that decided to back a section of the government that was fully self-funded so that they could pull even more of the surplus over for paying contractors in my opinion. It amazes me that these are the same morons who blasted Gilmore (and I agree he wasn't much of a Gov) for contracting state work out, and they are about to do the same with road maintenance.
